Located on the tip of Chichagof Island is the small fishing
village of Elfin Cove. Alaska is
famous for small & remote fishing communities that may have a “few cabins”
to call it a community or town or village, etc. Elfin Cove is unique that it is
situated on a boardwalk that circles the town with house on stilts & not to
forget the floating houses. There’s
a post office, school, museum, gift shop, general store, restaurant & fish
processing plant to name a few of the items on the island. The only way to get
there is by boat or float plane. The yearlong population of the village is only
a couple of dozen with most of the residents coming to the village for the
summer. According to the Alaskan Wilderness Guide, referring to Elfin Cove, “
This protected, flask-shaped harbor was originally called “gunkhole”…Tlingits
who visited the harbor would not overwinter because of “evil spirits” there.”
It’s quite the place to check out for sure in Southeast Alaska to catch a real glimpse
of the fishing way of life that Alaska is famous for.
