Petersburg Street |
The charming picturesque fishing village of Petersburg with
a population of roughly 3,100 people is located on Mitkof Island. I particularly
like stopping here weekly to take advantage of watching the boats in the harbor.
Peter Buschmann settled it at the turn of the century. It has quite the Norwegian heritage
that you can still see today. I
was lucky enough to be in port when the Norwegian Festival was taking place. I’ve
never seen so many people in Viking costumes walking along the main street.
There was a parade & it was quite festive with children in traditional Norwegian
costumes, a Viking ship with Vikings on it & not to forget a small group of
natives playing traditional instruments.
A lot of spirit for a charming fishing village filled the main street
& there was even a herring toss too.
Fishing is the mainstay of the community & approximately $22 million
of seafood is processed each year.
Yes, fishing is the way of life with a Norwegian flair tied into it.
